March Challenge - Years 1 & 2

Kimie and Sebastian were making sticks from interlocking cubes. Kimie made blue sticks two cubes long. Sebastian made red sticks three cubes long. They both made a lot of sticks.

Kimie put her blue sticks end to end in a long line. Sebastian put his red sticks end to end in a line underneath Kimie's.

a) Can they make their lines the same length?  How long would their lines be?
b) How many sticks (of 2 blue cubes) could Kimie use?
c) How many sticks (of 3 red cubes) would Sebastian put down?

Extension:  Can they make another line of equal length?

Solutions are to be completed by Wednesday 30th March.  Please post them into the Maths Challenge Box in the picture book library.

March Challenge - Years 5 & 6

Imagine you have 25 beads.
You have to make a three-digit number on an abacus.
You must use all 25 beads for each number you make.

How many different three-digit numbers can you make?
Write them in order.

Here are some examples of how a place value abacus works.  These are not possible solutions to the problem though, as the first example only uses 8 beads and the second only uses 17 beads.
